Dr. Martin Wesley specializes with addictions and individuals wanting help for habits that are dragging them down from accomplishing their goals. Dr. Wesley does not believe people are “powerless” to control their addictive behavior and he will never call his clients “addicts” or “alcoholics”. He respects their ability to choose their goals and believes in their ability to change. He helps motivate them toward change through specific strategies and gives them the tools, encouragement and accountability to make these changes.
Dr. Wesley believes that ambivalence, or feeling two ways about behavior change, is a natural part of overcoming any addiction. Drugs help people feel better and to deny these benefits for the clients is unhelpful. Yet, life without substances can also be great and without the horrible consequences that drug use and other addiction brings. Dr. Wesley thoughtfully and skillfully utilizes techniques and strategies that are responsive to the client to help them overcome their ambivalence and moves and supports them toward change.
Dr. Wesley works primarily with the individual but also will work with groups, if this is beneficial for his client. He will also want to work with the client’s family, if possible, to maximize the client’s probability of success.
